1 injured, 1 dead in massive Ormond Beach R/V explosion

Kim Huston was outside smoking a cigarette just before 1 a.m. when she heard a big pop and saw fire. The explosion that happened next left one person dead.

Nearby, on U.S. 1, an R/V had lost control and veered off the road.

“No sooner did we see the fire and the tree was knocked over,” she said. “Then I see people running and pulling the guy (out of the R/V), the guy was trying to get out.”

Witnesses rescued the man from the R/V. His identity and condition were not immediately available.

A second person, who was also not identified, was killed in the crash and ensuing explosion, Ormond Beach Police said.

The explosion on U.S. 1 near Interstate 95 in Volusia County, was so violent that one of the R/V tires was blown all the way to a nearby gas station.

Police are trying to find out why the R/V left the roadway and what caused it to explode.

An investigation into the explosion is ongoing.
