21 neglected horses removed from S Fla. ranch

DAVIE, Fla. — Twenty-one neglected horses have been removed from a South Florida ranch.

Victor Cutino of Peaceful Ridge Rescue says the Paso Fino horses were found standing in more than a foot of their own waste at the Davie Ranch. He also says no food for the horses was found on the property.

The horses were removed Saturday and Sunday. The rescue group's volunteers say the horses were skittish, hungry and suffering from ailments to their hoofs.

Police are investigating. Cutino says the horses' owner told authorities that he could no longer afford to care for the animals.

Most of the horses were taken to the rescue group's property nearby, where they will receive care until they are healthy enough to be adopted. Five horses were taken to a Pompano Beach ranch.
