9 Investigates moments leading up to deadly officer-involved shooting

ORLANDO, Fla. — Channel 9 found out what a man may have tried to do before an Orlando police officer opened fire on him.

The officer-involved shooting happened Friday at the Watauga Woods apartments off Curry Ford Road.

Officials said Officer Kelvin Vidro was the first on scene after Orlando police received reports of a fight that started during a party. Police said five people were reported to be involved in the altercation.

Vidro first encountered Albert Davis, who witnesses said was intoxicated. According to radio transmissions, Davis ran and the officer followed him. Investigators said that's when a violent struggle ensued between the two.

Investigators believe the 23-year-old grabbed Vidro's Taser and tried to use his weapons. It's unclear if the officer was hit by the Taser during the struggle. According to police, Vidro fired one shot at Davis, killing him.

Sources told Eyewitness News that the officer was in fear for his life and had to use deadly force. It will be up to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to decide if the shooting was justified.

Davis' family did not want to discuss the incident with Eyewitness News on Tuesday.
