Albertsons closes nearly all Central Florida locations

Several Albertsons stores in Central Florida closed their doors on Saturday, potentially leaving hundreds of employees without jobs.

The employees have been given a chance to transfer to any open positions at other Albertsons stores in Florida, however there are only four remaining stores in the state.

The locations that are closing have been completely cleared out. The store's furniture and equipment will go up for auction in late June, according to officials.

Albertsons announced it was closing almost all of the Central Florida locations in April. The only Albertsons location that will stay open is in Altamonte Springs.

The Albertsons that closed their doors were located in Longwood, Lake Mary, Winter Springs, Orlando, and Apopka.

Across the state, 13 stores were closed on Saturday.

Just over 500 employees were affected by the closings, whether they were laid off or relocated.

Albertsons officials told WFTV nearly all of the Central Florida locations are closing mostly due to economic challenges. Albertsons say they will continue to focus on the remaining open locations.

The store buildings that now sit vacant could potentially be an eyesore in some communities. Albertsons says depending on whether the building was leased or owned, they will market the property to new tenants or owners.
