ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Apopka High School teacher's assistant was arrested and is accused of leaving her elderly mother in deplorable conditions at a motel.
Police said 39-year-old Rhonda Miller and her 85-year-old mother were living in a room at the Crosby Motor Inn in Apopka.
More than one dozen cats were found in the motel room and the smell of feces and urine was so strong, investigators said they couldn't go inside.
The 85-year-old had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.
Miller was arrested and charged with neglect of the elderly.
Orange County school officials said Miller is a paraprofessional who assists the special education teacher. They said since Miller's arrest, she is on unauthorized leave without pay at this time.
The district said it has a requirement that employees must report their arrests within 48 hours of the arrest time.
Officials said Miller's future with the district will be decided after an investigation is complete.
