ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A bug problem continues to plague Boone High School.
Hundreds of bees and wasps swarmed near the football field Saturday, bothering scores of fans during a matchup between the Orlando Falcons and Deltona Titans.
Ciara Ponder was at the game to cheer on her brother, but wound up getting stung.
“I got stung by a bee. A honeybee,” she said.
School district officials said they’re actually forager bees, swarming from near and far to find food.
Earlier this week students were warned of the problems and workers changed the trash bags where the bees seemed to migrating frequently, but exterminators are having trouble finding the source.
Ponder’s mom said the bugs were relentlessly swarming the stands.
“This is the first time I have ever seen so many bees attack someone or surround us at a game,” said Kim Whitehall-Jackson.
School officials said the bees may be traveling from a hive far off campus, and several wasp nests were spotted on around the campus.
Pest control worked to wipe them out earlier in the week, but the problem persists.
The exterminator told school officials to move the trash cans away from the dining area, to change the trash bags frequently and to trim plants that are blooming.
