Black bear draws attention outside Longwood dental office

LONGWOOD, Fla. — A black bear attracted some attention outside a Longwood dentist's office.

The bear was spotted Tuesday morning in a tree along Wekiva Springs Road, across from the former Sabal Point Golf Course.

"First thing I thought of was there is another bear. I have seen many pictures of them in the newspaper about them and there he is," said dental patient Ruby Yost.

Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission sent an officer out to investigate.

Some people in the area put out signs cautioning that there is a bear in the tree.

Maria Music spotted the black bear on her way to Traditions National Bank, where she works.

"I feel bad for him, I hope that when he gets down he will be OK because there is traffic on both sides so I don't know which way to go,"

One person reported getting a little too close to the tree, causing the bear to growl, but the 20,000 cars that drive along Wekiva Springs Road each day are a much bigger safety concern.

Bear sightings in the hundreds aren't uncommon in central Florida. The area where the bear was spotted is adjacent to the 7,000-acre Wekiwa Springs State Park, home to a large number of black bears.
