FORT MYERS, Fla. — The family of a south Florida boy who was infected with a brain-eating amoeba is mourning his loss.

Zachary Reyna, 12, died in a hospital on Saturday.

Doctors believe Reyna contracted the amoeba while knee-boarding near his Fort Myers home last month.

Family members gathered at a local baseball field to remember Reyna.

"I look at the big picture and I see how he's affected the world. As a family, we stand strong together, but the whole world was behind him," said Reyna's cousin, Tammy Zaguirre.

Reyna's family said they will continue to honor him by wearing the number four, which was his baseball uniform number.
