Boy, 4, killed in Polk County crash

Officials told Eyewitness News one person is confirmed dead after a small plane crashed on New Smyrna Beach Tuesday night.

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A child was killed and another is in critical condition after a Polk County crash involving a freightliner box truck Saturday, deputies said.

The wreck happened about 9:15 a.m. on Highway 27 and Polo Park Boulevard in Davenport.

Deputies said a Toyota was stopped at the light at the intersection when the truck driver slammed into the back of the car.

The impact caused the back of the Toyota to be forced up to and into the backseat where the children were sitting.

A 4-year-old boy was killed and a 2-year old girl was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando in critical condition. The girl is now in serious condition.

The children’s father, who was driving the Toyota, was taken to Orlando Regional medical Center in serious condition. He was in guarded condition Saturday evening.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

Deputies are still investigating the crash.

"In one week's time, two little boys, both named Jayden and both four-years of age, have lost their lives in traffic crashes in our county," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "Neither crash was related to the other, but in both cases, the vehicles these children were in, were stuck from the rear. These are the types of tragedies which can be avoided."
Drivers must realize they're not the only ones on the road, Judd said.
