BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — As voters lined up across the state to participate in the Florida primary election, polling locations in Brevard County were getting a lot more traffic than officials expected.
By mid-day Tuesday, more than 41,000 Brevard County votes had been cast in the presidential primary, a county elections official said.
In comparison, during the 2012 presidential primary election, a total of 48,168 voters made their way to the polls, Brevard County records show.
An additional 72,000 votes were cast early or as absentee in the 2016 primary, Brevard County Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott said.
That is an increase of more than 70 percent from early and absentee votes cast in 2012, county data shows.
The number of early and absentee votes in Brevard County for 2016 nearly equaled the total of all votes cast during the 2012 presidential primary.
As of 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, more than 114,000 total votes had been recorded in Brevard County, 50 percent more than all the votes cast in 2012.
About 65 percent of the votes were cast in the Republican presidential primary.
