Arrest made in Cocoa Beach standoff, police say

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — A well-being check ends in an arrest in Cocoa Beach on Saturday.

Cocoa Beach police responded to the 300 block of North Fourth Street following the request for a well-being check on a female who lives at the residence.

Police said investigators had reason to believe that a person inside the home had an outstanding arrest warrant for a prior assault and battery by strangulation charge against the woman.

According to police, officers at the scene confirmed that 35-year-old Kelvin Thompson, of Cape Canaveral, the person associated with the warrant, was inside the home and was refusing to allow the female and another male occupant from leaving the residence.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to the location to assist.

After setting up a perimeter, hostage negotiators were able to get Thompson surrender without incident.

Thompson was arrested and is being held at the Brevard County Jail with no bond.

Thompson is being charged with domestic violence battery and two charges of false imprisonment.

This was an isolated incident with no threat to the community.
