Brevard County organization provides thousands of meals to children in need during pandemic

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Over the past 10 weeks, the Children’s Hunger Project has provided 56,000 weekend food packages to children living in Brevard County.

At the Bruce Nelson Child Hunger Center in Cocoa, volunteers with the Children’s Hunger Project fill thousands of weekend food packages for Brevard County kids.

“Some of us really don’t understand what’s going on out there. Until you come here or deliver these food packs, you don’t understand what’s going on,” said Tara Germain, a volunteer.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the nonprofit partnered with Brevard County Public Schools to ensure children would eat even while they were unable to go to school.

“We went from serving 2,400 weekly to almost 6,000 every week during the 10 weeks the children were not in school,” said Cheryl Cominsky, executive director of the Children’s Hunger Project.

Cominsky said the organization has made a commitment to continue working with the school district through at least the end of June, which is in addition to the weekend food packages its providing in collaboration with the United Way’s Feed and Read program and other local groups.

Cominsky said it costs another $52,000 for thousands of packages per week.

Without an ongoing state or federal funding source, the Children’s Hunger Project relies on individual volunteers and community support.
