Central Florida firefighters receive grant for equipment to help prevent cancer

OCOEE, Fla. — Florida’s State Fire Marshal, Jimmy Patronis, awarded a total of $112,000, split to 13 fire stations around Central Florida.

It’s part of a cancer decontamination equipment grant.

The program protects the safety of firefighters who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals.

Funding given to the different fire stations will go towards buying new protective gear.

“We need to make sure that the men and woman that dawn the uniform, that rush into danger when everyone else is feeling it, we need to do everything humanly possible to make sure they have long, healthy lives, to spend time with their families,” Patronis said.

Marion County Fire Rescue received the most funding, followed by Ocala and Minneola Fire Rescue.
