Charges for mother accused of killing children expected to be upgraded

PALM BAY, Fla. — A Brevard County mother has not been charged yet in the death of her 5-month-old son, but Jessica McCarty has been charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of her two other children.

McCarty has been on suicide watch since her arrest on Friday when she called 911 and told dispatchers she killed her three children.

Laci McCarty, 7, and Philip McCarty, 8, were pronounced dead at the scene, and 5-month-old Christopher Swist died Sunday at the hospital.

McCarty was initially charged with attempted murder, and the charge has not been upgraded since Swist died.

Friends, family members and strangers packed a Palm Bay church Monday evening to remember three young children who police said were killed by their mother.

The 8 p.m. vigil had to be moved to Palm Bay Christian Church after hundreds of people planned to attend.

The event was organized by a close friend of Phillip McCarty, the father of two of the children who died.

"This is just for support for the family and remembering those sweet babies," friend Chrissy Thompson said.

Although many people still have unanswered questions about the case, they hope Monday's vigil can bring the family comfort.

"I just really pray for peace for the families and in time, we all can move past this," friend Valencia Woods said.

McCarty is being held at the Brevard County Jail without bail.
