BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A husband and wife, both in their 70s, were crossing the street on US-1 in Malabar as they tried to get to Yellow Dog Cafe for dinner, but never made it.
A car hit them before they could get to the other side of the road.
"Facebook has been crazy with sympathy. A lot of people been calling," said cafe owner Stuart Borton.
Borton put up a yellow wreath in honor of Mary and Carl Burch of Palm Bay.
He said they were regular customers, and people in their neighborhood were stunned to hear the news.
"I didn't know it was them until just now. It's a real shock," said neighbor Tony Paoletta.
They said Mary and Carl were quiet, but very caring.
They had just moved into the home about a year ago from up north.
"They'd give you the shirt off their back. They were some of the nicest people you will ever know," said Paoletta.
The case is still under investigation, but at this point, it appears to just be a tragic accident.
Troopers said alcohol was not a factor and it doesn't appear the driver was speeding.
Residents in the area said they've tried in the past to get the speed limit lowered from 55 miles an hour.
