More than 100 people at Overlook Apartments in Daytona Beach were forced to evacuate Thanksgiving night due to rain damage caused by a watermelon-sized hole on the complex’s roof, residents say.
While heavy rains on Thanksgiving Day caused the leaking water issue, residents said they’ve been dealing with the issue since Hurricane Irma.
“We live on (the) ground floor, and we had five different leaks,” resident Belle Gilmartin said. “It wasn’t like little drips.”
Now residents are dealing with mold and fungus and say management at the apartment complex haven’t done much to remedy the situation.
“It was just pouring down through the ceiling and just chaotic,” Gilmartin said. “Luckily, we got buckets underneath all those leaks.”
When Channel 9 approached the Overlook Apartments management, employees declined to comment on the leaks or if the company was planning to help residents shoulder the financial burden of cleaning up.
“I would like them to cut everyone’s rent, just down a little bit, especially the electric bills,” Gilmartin said. “I want them to pay for that, because they’re using everyone’s electricity.”
