Daytona Beach leaders approve location for new 32,000-square-foot mosque

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Mosque, as well as a community center, is expanding into an old Daytona Beach YMCA.

Daytona Beach commissioners voted 7-0 Wednesday night to allow a 32,000-square-foot mosque to be built at the site of the vacant YMCA building.

Public commenters spoke in favor of the Mosque and many defended the expansion. They said the Mosque is needed for the community.

Earlier this month, city leaders approved supporting the rezoning of the property near Derbyshire and Nova roads into the Islamic Center of Daytona Beach.

That property had been home to a YMCA for more than 30 years before it became dormant.

The mosque is expected to open next year.
