DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — There could soon be more police patrolling the streets of Daytona Beach’s entertainment district.
More than 200 crimes were reported within a half-mile radius of Seabreeze Blvd. between December and May.

Those crimes range from vandalism and drug offenses to the murder of a couple during Bike Week.
In response, city officials want to rent a building on North Grandview Ave. to use as a police department substation.

The police department wrote in a memo to the city commission that the location would help with overcrowding at its Harvey Ave. substation, and put more police in the area.
Officers would use the location to write up reports, do briefings and detain suspects.

The department is currently down approximately 40 officers, and it’s not known yet how often the substation would be staffed.
The substation could potentially be open by next April.
