Daytona Beach sergeant under investigation for second time

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Daytona Beach police sergeant is under investigation for a second time, and the latest accusation could cost Sgt. Joseph Sellix his job.

Sellix was suspended for nearly two weeks for two incidents earlier this year.

Daytona Beach police officials won't release details from Sellix's current investigation until it's completed.

Investigators couldn't say how much longer the investigation will take.

In January, Sellix responded to a domestic disturbance call involving a couple arguing in their beachside apartment.

As Sellix was walking back to his patrol car with a female officer, he made a comment about the disturbance, and it was caught on her body camera.

Sellix: "You know why she goes back to him all the time?"

Officer: "Why?"

Sellix: "Because he's hung as well as I am."

According to the internal investigative report, Sellix later contacted the girlfriend involved in the domestic disturbance on Facebook, seeking information about her well-being and asked if her boyfriend still lived with her.

Sellix was suspended for 12 hours.

"This type of an offense, and this type of discipline will always be with him,” said law enforcement expert Chuck Drago.

Drago said contacting someone involved in a police investigation through Facebook is unusual.

He said the sexual comment he made to a subordinate could be considered sexual harassment.

"It's bad enough coming from a fellow officer, but coming from a supervisor is even that much more egregious,” Drago said.

Sellix has been with the department for about eight years and became a sergeant about a year ago.
