NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — More than 30 of 80 units were damaged Tuesday when a fire tore through a New Smyrna Beach self-storage business.
The fire at the StorQuest Self Storage on Pioneer Trail was contained to building 12 in the back.
But for many of the people who had storage units, the valuables they kept were destroyed.
Firefighters said it took almost 90 minutes to get the four-alarm fire under control.
“That whole area is just gone. I knew I was done for when we walked across saw that and I could see the backside of 12, the way it was burned up, I knew it was bad,” customer Dennis Dearborn said.
The two units Dearborn rented contained his mother's jewelry, his father's M-1 car from World War II and a generator.
He said the items were destroyed.
“You wouldn't even recognize it as a generator if you didn’t know what it was,” he said.
Firefighters said they do not know the cause of the fire, but they do not believe it was suspicious.
No injuries were reported.
