Evidence released in crowbar attack on Satellite Beach teen

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — The State Attorney’s Office released new video, photos and documents in the crowbar attack on a Satellite Beach teenager.

The attack was so severe, the teen’s mother thought he’d been shot.

It happened at a home on the corner of Kale Street and Glenwood Avenue in February.

The State Attorney’s Office released some of the first images taken after Daniel Vukovich, 17, was attacked in the driveway of his Satellite Beach home.

Investigators said after hearing a loud bang, the victim’s mother opened the garage to the family’s Glenwood Avenue home and Vukovich managed to stumble his way inside, collapsing into his mother’s arm.

According to the police report, Vukovich suffered multiple fractures to his right temple, and to the left side of his skull and a fracture below his nose and upper jaw.

The newly released documents said Vukovich told investigators at the hospital that he got his injuries from a “nasty spill” but later said he had no idea what happened.

Three teenagers were arrested in the case.

Investigators said Vukovich had trouble with Dylan Thomas, 17, months before the attack.

Thomas accused Vukovich of planning to rob him, police said.

Thomas was suspended from Satellite Beach High School after a physical confrontation with Vukovich.

He believed the victim to be a thief and thought he stole marijuana from him twice.

Court documents outline allegations of a plot for revenge involving Thomas, his girlfriend, Jessie Umberger, and their friend, Rebecca Gotay.

Investigators said surveillance video captured Gotay driving Thomas to the victim’s home on the morning he was attacked.

She told investigators there was no blood on Thomas when he returned to her car, and she would have no part in hurting a kid.

But investigators said Gotay and her co-defendant, Umberger, both knew Thomas has made threats to harm Vukovich the day before the attack.

They said Thomas was dressed in all black, his jacket was worn inside out and his face was concealed.

Police said some of the clothing he wore wasn't his own. Another camera captured images of a blue Ford Focus driving across Mathers Bridge.

Investigators said the two people inside were Thomas and Umberger.

They believe somewhere along their ride, Thomas disposed of the crowbar used to assault Vukovich.

Thomas, Gotay and Umberger face attempted first-degree murder charges.

Thomas was charged as an adult.
