ORLANDO, Fla. — A Facebook page promoting a White Student Union is creating a big stir at the University of Central Florida.
It comes roughly a week after anti-Semitic stickers were found on campus.
The school had filed a complaint with Facebook, saying the page violated use of the school’s logo, but it’s the content that has students talking.
One of the posts from the page asks, “How did you celebrate whiteness today?”
Reaction on the page has been mixed.
The university said it’s aware of the page, but the group is not recognized by the school.
There’s a lot of debate over who’s creating the pages, but similar pages have popped up across the country, and some have questioned their validity.
The UCF group posted an unsigned statement Tuesday, claiming the page was created following a sit-in by the Black Student Union last week in connection to protests by black students at the University of Missouri.
Some students said they aren’t taking the page seriously.
“I think it’s just some guy playing a joke. I don’t think it’s anything serious. Or maybe like a group of people, I don’t know,” said UCF student Mark Rhodes. “I think it’s kind of inflammatory on purpose. They’re just going around trying to make trouble.”
The page was discovered less than a week after anti-Semitic stickers were found on campus, but the group said in posts it’s not responsible for those.
“The White Student Union doesn’t do anything. It wouldn’t do anything in my opinion,” Jenkins said.
The group said it’s meeting privately out of concern for safety.
The group changed its pictures Tuesday afternoon and the page remained active.
