Mother carrying child hit by car while crossing road in Orlando

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A mother and her daughter were hit by a car while crossing an Orlando street Monday afternoon, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The unidentified victims were struck on South Orange Blossom Trail near Holden Avenue.

They were taken to Orlando Health in serious condition, but were later upgraded to stable condition.

“I saw the driver. He seemed pretty distraught about it,” said witness Trevon Cleveland.

Witnesses said as the mother and child crossed South Orange Blossom Trail, two cars to the left of the driver who hit them stopped to yield the right-of-way.

The mother was carrying the child in her arms when she was struck.

Their shoes were left on the side of the road along with the groceries the mother had been carrying.

Troopers don’t know why the driver didn’t stop at the yield sign.

Cleveland said he crosses the intersection nearly every day and it’s usually busy.

“You are going to have a lot of people on bikes, on foot crossing the road,” Cleveland said. “People don’t stop in this area.”

Troopers interviewed the driver for more than an hour after the crash. The driver was free to leave after the interview.

Troopers said the investigation is ongoing and they still need to talk to the woman who was hit.

They would not comment on possible charges or citations.
