TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A tax bill that looks to save Florida families money advanced in Tallahassee on Wednesday.
It creates tax holidays for things like back to school and disaster preparedness, and also permanently eliminate the sales tax on firearm safety devices, oral hygiene products and diapers.

During the pandemic, mother of three Brittani Garay said she quickly learned how a working family could fall on hard times.
“When COVID came it took me out of my job. So I didn’t have a job for about two years and I was pregnant so diapers were like the most essential things,” she said.

Diapers, an unavoidable expense for her baby Scarlett, came at a cost of $60 to $100 a month.
Garay said she relied heavily on help from the Central Florida Diaper Bank to meet her baby’s needs. And to ease that cost Wednesday, she’s hoping a bipartisan tax package that would permanently eliminate Florida’s sales tax on diapers will get signed into law.

“It’s an essential product. We should be able to get that and feminine products without taxes being applied to those,” she said.
The bill already passed in the House and is working its way through the Senate.
