LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Lake County commissioners listened to dozens of residents who don't want their property taxes to increase at a meeting Tuesday.
The county is facing a $13 million budget deficit and leaders are moving forward with a property tax hike to make up for the shortfall.
The commission chairman told Channel 9 the millage rate hasn't been raised in Lake County for years and the increase would fully balance the budget.
"We're here today because we have not balanced the budget without reserves since I've been on the commission in 2008. And why? Because we didn't raise the millage rates," said Commissioner Jimmy Conner.
Several residents spoke out about preserving funds that go to libraries, public works and the sheriff's office. Many others were primarily concerned with the property tax hike, which will mean a nearly 14 percent increase in taxes.
The 5.58 millage increase passed in a vote amongst commissioners, but it will not be finalized until a budget hearing in late September. Officials plan to allow public comment during that meeting as well.
