Lake County corrections officer charged with bringing contraband into jail facility, deputies say

TAVARES, Fla. — Deputies in Lake County have arrested and charged a corrections officer for allegedly bringing contraband into the Lake County jail.

Deputies said jail officer Alex Webber was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation of illegal items being brought into the Lake County Detention Center.

Detectives said Webber has been paid to bring tobacco products into the jail since around July.

Webber was arrested Thursday and charged with unlawful use of a two-way communication device and conspiracy to commit introduction of contraband into a county detention facility for his involvement, records show.

Deputies said Webber has been employed with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office since 2017 and has no prior disciplinary actions.

Due to the charges, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said termination proceedings are now underway for Webber.

Earlier this month, Lake County deputies charged 14 people, including corrections officer Jimmy Ankrom, in connection with bringing illegal items into the Lake County jail.

The investigation, called “Operation Hide and Seek,” found tobacco, marijuana, methamphetamine and suboxone that were all bound for the Lake County jail.
