Lake County unveils statue honoring life and work of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune

TAVARES, Fla. — The Lake County Historical Society unveiled a new statue in honor of Central Florida trailblazer Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

Bethune, a tireless champion of national civil rights, was the founder of Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach and a chapter of the Council of Negro Women in Clermont.

The new statue was carved from the same marble that was used in the statue on display in the U.S. Capitol.

The statue is on display inside the Lake County History Museum in Tavares.
