ORLANDO, Fla. — Business owners are facing a difficult decision: Lay off employees or find a way to keep paying them with little or no money coming in.

The Paycheck Protection Program was included in the federal CARES Act, which would allow business owners to qualify for forgivable loans if they keep employees on books.

UF could test students when on-campus classes resume

University of Florida officials on Tuesday said they are considering testing 500 to 1,000 students a day for COVID-19 as the school looks at plans to reopen campus in the fall semester.

Steve Orlando, a spokesman for the university, said testing up to 1,000 students a day represents “one possible model under consideration” to allow students and faculty to safely return to campus.



Trump defends administration’s handling of pandemic

4:30 p.m. update

President Donald Trump defended his administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic while promising to help states safely begin reopening their economies.

Trump was visited at the White House on Tuesday by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The president insisted that the United States was doing enough testing to protect Americans reentering the workforce.

He said the administration was talking with airlines about requiring virus and temperature checks for travelers from certain international locations.

Florida health authorities have attributed many of the state’s cases to people who arrived from other hot spots.

Trump held a news conference Tuesday afternoon about the paycheck protection program.

DeSantis to make announcement about reopening economy

1:15 p.m. update

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he will make an announcement Wednesday about reopening the state’s economy.

The state's stay-at-home order is set to expire Thursday.

DeSantis made the announcement while meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

DeSantis has previously said that the state will reopen from the coronavirus economic shutdown in “baby steps” and that its regions could reopen at different times and rates.

5 new deaths in Central Florida

11:55 a.m. update

The Florida Department of Health reported 83 coronavirus-related deaths and 708 new cases statewide since Monday.

Five of the deaths were reported in Central Florida.

Orange and Polk counties reported two new deaths each since Monday, bringing their death tolls to 32 and 20 respectively.

Sumter County also reported a new death since Monday, bringing the county’s death toll to 13.

Officials said the total number of cases in Florida has reached 32,846 and the death toll now stands at 1,171.

Of the positive cases, 31,986 Florida residents and 860 involve nonresidents.

Officials said 5,222 people have been hospitalized.

Trump, DeSantis meeting at White House

11:15 a.m. update

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted that President Donald Trump will hold a joint live news conference with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 11:30 a.m.

But that has now been changed to a meeting between the two in the Oval Office at 11:30 a.m.

DeSantis, Trump to meet

9:07 a.m. update

Gov. Ron DeSantis will be meeting with President Trump at the White House at 11 a.m.

Details about the meeting have not been released, but it could surround Florida’s response to the coronavirus outbreak.


Volusia County volunteers to provide meals for first responders

8:53 a.m. update

Daytona Automall, Houligan’s, and Food Supply Inc. will team up to feed AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach, Halifax Health Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach Police and New Smyrna Fire to show support to first responders.

The meals will be distributed at 11 a.m.


Orange County Task Force to discuss reopening plan

7:22 a.m. update

The Orange County Task Force is meeting twice Tuesday to figure out when it will be safe to reopen as the clock ticks on Florida’s stay-at-home order.

Mayor Jerry Demings outlined three things he’d like to focus on this week: Getting the community ready for businesses to open, getting the county read for public buildings to reopen and more testing.

The meetings are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Kissimmee officials to give free produce to those in need

5:49 a.m. update

The city of Kissimmee has teamed up with Farm Share Inc. to host a free produce giveaway at 10:30 a.m.

Each car will receive one bag that will be placed in the trunk in adherence with social distance guidelines.

The event will be held at 2201 Mabbette Street.


Orange County mobile testing site set to reopen

4:21 a.m. update

The COVID-19 mobile testing site is all set for a round of tests at Apopka High School.

The site administered tests at West Orange Park on Monday.

The testing site, which opens at 8 a.m., accepts people with and without symptoms.

Testing is free for county residents with an appointment, which can be made by calling 407-723-5004.

The site will move to Camping World Stadium on Wednesday.

Orange County officials also announced two additional sites will open from Wednesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can view those locations below:
