ORLANDO, Fla. — As small businesses try to recover after weeks of being closed, some florists are hoping Mother’s Day will give them a big boost.

One local flower shop was forced to close its doors for the first time in 27 years due to the pandemic.

Kitty Khanna of Mel Johnson’s Flower Shoppe said her shop gave away hundreds of dollars’ worth of flowers.

“Flowers are perishable. I can’t keep it and I might as well let somebody enjoy it,” Khanna said.

The shops doors have been open for three days and Khanna said she hopes Mother’s Day will help recover what her business has lost.

Due to the coronavirus, she had to cut staff and create a new plan.

While business is busy this week, Khanna said it’s best to shop local and that “if you have to send flowers, go through your local flower shop.”
