Malnourished animals rescued from Lake County farm

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators said they saved a group of malnourished farm animals just in time.

Deputies said six horses and 11 pigs were starving, and some had horrible wounds.

Many of the animals have been adopted since the rescue.

The owner said she could no longer take care of them and didn’t know what to do.

If not for the tip that sent deputies to the farm, officials said the animals would not have survived.

Investigators said the owner told them that because of a disability and financial problems, she couldn’t care for the animals.

Veterinarians treated the horses and pigs.

“It’s a long process and they’re doing much better now. We’re looking to adopt them out,” said Fred Jones of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

So far, two horses and all the pigs have been adopted.

Officials are still hoping to find the last four houses a good home.

Deputies said the case was sent to the state attorney’s office to determine if any animal cruelty charges will be filed.

“Thank goodness that neighbor called in and the horses were able to get the kind of help that they needed,” said Jones.

Deputies said there was no food on the farm for the animals, and the grass for the horses was scarce.
