DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Daytona Beach AT&T store was hit by a man who apparently used a toddler to perform a burglary.
Police said a man who was holding a child asked to use the bathroom at the Beville Road store so he could change the child's diaper.
But employees said the man instead stole thousands of dollars in electronics while in the back.
"The man took the child in, allegedly changed the diapers, and left within maybe six to seven minutes," said Sgt. John Creamer of the Daytona Beach Police Department.
The restroom where the man took the child was right near the store's stock room, where a safe was left unlocked, authorities said.
Police said the man was carrying a large diaper bag, but employees didn't suspect a thing until long after he left.
"Later that night, the store clerks were doing inventory and they realized, 'Hey, the stock room door is open. We're missing a great deal of merchandise, iPhones, iPads and other electronics,'" said Creamer.
Police said the man is about 6 feet tall and weighs 170 pounds. He was wearing a tan baseball hat and aviator sunglasses.
Investigators believe the child is 3 years old, but they're not sure if the toddler is actually the man's child.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
