Victim of triple shooting shares inspiring words on survival

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Daytona Beach man who survived a triple shooting spoke at a news conference Wednesday.

Bethune-Cookman University student Micah Parham said he was shot several times in a Daytona Beach apartment in September.

Two other students, Timesha Carswell, 21, and Diona McDonald, 19, were killed in the shooting at the Carolina Club apartments.

A fourth student, Sidney Washington, jumped out of a window to escape.

Suspected shooter York Bodden escaped, but was later arrested in Miami by Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents.

"How would I even start to tell them that it's going to be OK? You don't have to give up on your dreams. You don't have to give up on school. You don’t have to give up on life because a tragedy happened. But I suppose that’s why this happened, so I can console my students," said Parham.

Bodden committed suicide in his Miami-Dade jail cell on Sept. 18.

Bodden, 26, lived in the Carolina Club Apartments on Carolina Lake Drive with the women and Parham.

"Apparently, he was a roommate or started out as a roommate with the girls and our male victim," said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood. "Somewhere along the line, there was a dispute about not wanting him to be in there anymore. They tried to refund his first month's rent. He didn't take too kindly to that."

Police said Bodden left the apartment before returning to shoot the women and Parham.
