Marion Co. family nabs massive gator

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — It's the second massive alligator one Marion County family has logged.

The more than 13-foot gator was pulled out of Lake George in August.

The Larramore family has spent a lot of time on the lake, but this time when they pulled up to the boat ramp, they had no clue they'd come back with their biggest catch yet.

"It's the fun of it; it's the adrenaline of it," said gator hunter Lacey Larramore.

Lacey and Jason Larramore get a thrill every time they catch a gator big enough to be their next prize.

Their biggest catch this hunting season was more than 13 feet long and weighed more than 800 pounds.

"It's sheer dead weight, it's heavy, there's nothing to grab to," Jason Larramore told Channel 9.

This year, the Florida Wildlife Commission issued almost 6,000 permits to people like the Larramores. Each permit comes with two tags to catch gators.

Last year, the Marion County family caught a 12-foot gator that weighed more than 900 pounds.  The mounted head alone weighed about 40 pounds.

It triggered memories of what Lacey Larramore said is the scariest moment of the catch: when they're hoisting the gator onto the boat.

"He's just looking at you with his mouth wide open, that's the most scariest part because he's still alive and anything can happen at that point in time," she said.

"She's yelling and screaming about 'Be careful, don't touch him,' this and that, but at the moment I don't think about it," Jason Larramore said.

Anyone who still has gator hunting tags left has until Saturday to use them.
