MELBOURNE, Fla. — Melbourne’s top cop is retiring after nearly four decades with the department.
During Melbourne police Chief Steve Mimbs’ tenure, the crime rate has dropped significantly.
But he’s also dealt with a series of high-profile personnel issues, including an independent assessment within the department that showed trust issues with the command staff.
“There's some work that needs to be done, some big picture work, and some cultural change,” said City Manager Mike McNees. “And we're going to have a new chief before too long whether he retires in 2017 or just a little bit after that.”
McNees said he wants to create as little turmoil as possible to the department with his departure.
