Multi-state scam claims to lower electric bill

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Kissimmee Utility Authority is warning of a multi-state scam that has made its way to Central Florida and claims to help lower your electric bill.

Crooks are claiming they can save you big money on your electric bill with a new program created by President Obama but instead, they are stealing people’s identities and hard earned money.

KUA said customers are being told that the president has approved special funding for utility bill assistance.

Through automated phone calls, door-to-door visits and online, the scammers are asking for personal information, including Social Security numbers.  They are giving victims fake bank routing numbers to pay their bills so they can steal their money.

“It’s happened to my mother and it’s terrible, but it’s happening,” said Key West resident Pat Hart.

KUA said it’s already been contacted by several customers who have been approached by the scammers in recent days.

If you believe you have been victimized by the scam, KUA has set up a hotline to help. The number is 407-933-9800.
