Naked swimmer acting ‘erratically,' dies on the way to hospital, officials say

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A man found naked and acting “erratically” while swimming at Sebastian Inlet State Park died as emergency personnel were taking him to the hospital, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said.

Park visitors contacted deputies at about 7:15 a.m. Saturday after seeing the man acting strangely, deputies said.

When they arrived, they found Peter Robinson, 57, of West Palm Beach, acting incoherently.

“(He) appeared to be under the influenced of an intoxicating substance,” a BCSO release said.

Robinson was taken into custody, put on an ambulance and taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center by Brevard County Fire Rescue for evaluation, the release said.

When he arrived at the hospital, Robinson was dead, investigators said.

In the hours leading up to the incident at Sebastian Inlet, Robinson fled from two different law enforcement agencies trying to pull him over for driving erratically, the BCSO said.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and Indian River Shores Police Department personnel tried to pull Robinson over but the man fled, the release said.

The cause of Robinson’s death was not released.

The Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement were both independently conducting parallel investigations into Robinson’s death.

Anyone with information on the incident or who may have witnessed Robinson’s recent activities, is asked to call the BCSO, 321-633-7162, or Crimeline, 800-423-TIPS.
