New COVID-19 testing sites aim to increase testing in Orange County Hispanic, black communities

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Data is starting to give a clearer look into who in Florida is testing positive for COVID-19.

In its latest daily report, the Florida Department of Health lists about 200 people who've tested positive as Hispanic.

The race or ethnicity is listed as unknown for only about 20% of everyone who’s tested positive, compared to 46% last week. That means the data is giving a clearer look at which races and ethnicities are being hit hardest by the virus.

“Progressively the data will be cleaned and those numbers will decrease,” said Orange County health officer Dr. Raul Pino.

Pino said new testing cites are focused on providing accessibility of testing to those in the county’s Hispanic and black communities.

“It could be we are testing more Caucasians than other groups, and that's why these mobile sites that are going to go into the heart of the community are important,” Pino said.

Last week, the Orange County commissioner who represents the 32822 ZIP code and several of the neighborhoods with a higher number of COVID-19 cases said most of her residents work in the service industry.

She said she also fears they may not be getting the messages because key information is delivered in English.
