SANFORD, Fla. — The noise at the SunRail maintenance yard in Sanford could be reduced this weekend due to a plan officials are trying out.
Neighbors said since last year, there has been a constant humming and roaring of engines at the Preserve at Lake Monroe, which sits next to the SunRail maintenance yard.
Neighbors said a lot of "for sale" signs have popped up this past year.
"At least five to 10 people that I know have moved out of the community because of the reason of this noise level," said a resident.
The train maintenance yard noise can be heard constantly, but at night, residents said it's worse.
"It's pretty loud at nighttime because they keep running the engines for approximately all night," said resident Mashood Asmad.
But after more than a year of complaints and even a request by the Sanford mayor to move the maintenance yard, a muffler could be the solution to the noise pollution.
"We're going to test it this week and see if it provides any relief for the sound and vibrations our train puts off, said Jessica Keane of the Florida Department of Transportation.
An exhaust-stack muffler is being installed on one train, and this weekend, FDOT will test noise levels.
It's the first option, but if it doesn't work residents could end up with noise-reducing windows and even a million-dollar noise wall.
"Anything that can help reduce that is what we're looking at," said Keane.
