ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators are still working to identify the victim who died in a fiery crash in Orange County.
Troopers said a man driving a BMW, who has not yet been identified, was heading northbound on Edgewood Ranch Road about 8 a.m. Saturday when the driver of a Jeep in front of the car slowed down to turn on Old Winter Garden Road.
The driver of the BMW didn’t slow down and crashed into the back of the Jeep, according to reports.
Both vehicles traveled off the roadway and struck a utility pole.
The BMW caught fire, trapping the driver in the fiery wreckage.
He died at the scene.
The man was so badly burned troopers said dental records will be needed to determine his identity.
The Jeep also caught fire, but the driver, Clinton Murvin, 17, was able to escape.
“The occupant in the white vehicle was able to get out before it went into flames,” said Corporal David Rodriguez.
Stunned onlookers said they were reminded just how quickly a situation on the road can become deadly.
“I heard a big boom and came running out. Looked over my fence and saw the flames shooting up,” said Tom Freeman. “Somebody speeding down the road. It happens every day.”
Murvin suffered minor injuries and was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
Old Winter Garden Road was closed in both directions while troopers investigated and worked to clear the scene.
By 12:30 p.m. only the turning lane remained closed.
As troopers sifted through charred remains, they concluded the person killed was speeding before he slammed into the 17-year-old at the intersection.
“Posted speed limit is 40 mph and they were driving way faster than that,” said Rodriguez.
Troopers do not know how fast the victim was driving before the crash.
At one point, nearly 2,000 Duke Energy customers lost power after the crash.
Hours later, about 400 were left in the dark but power was restored just before 6 p.m.
