Environmental organization honors the City of Orlando for sustainable efforts

ORLANDO, Fla. — An environmental organization honored The City of Orlando for its sustainable achievements on Friday.

The U.S. Green Building Council awarded Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orlando with Central Florida Leadership Awards at City Hall.

The nonprofit praised the city for its sustainable buildings and leadership in social responsibility.

Dyer received the Sustainability Legend Award for the Green Works program and helped Orlando receive a LEED Gold City designation.

USGBC defines LEED Gold Cities as community initiatives where local leaders plan social, economic and environmental goals to live more responsibly.

The organization also recognized Orlando with the following:

-The 2022 Green Facility Manager Award

-The 2022 Green Cape Award

-The Innovative Project of the Year Award for Resilience Hubs

Dyer and the Orlando City Council said they began transforming community centers into resilience hubs after 2021. The long-term project seeks to construct weather-resistant shelters for residents battling hurricanes, severe weather and extreme heat.

The mayor said the is proud of the staff’s hard work in the last 15 years.

“I’m humbled to receive the award, but it’s on behalf of so many people that have made the city of Orlando one of the greatest cities in all of America,” he said.

Dyer said he would like to invest in charging stations for more electric cars.
