GO GREEN: Electric scooters ready to ride in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando is about to get its first taste of motorized scooters.

A pilot program is allowing scooters in the city for one year, to see if they can be safely used without too many injuries.

The scooters can go up to 10 mph, which feels faster than it seems. It’s just a matter of getting comfortable on one.

"As a matter of fact, when I went to Atlanta, I planned where I stayed so I could ride the scooters to all the places I wanted to go," said rider David Luke.

Two hundred Lime scooters will replace Lime's bicycles around Orlando.

The bikes were wildly popular but did annoy some residents because they would often just be lying around yards or blocking sidewalks.

Lime says the scooters will be different.

"Being all digital, it really prevents people from being able to put them in these troubled areas,” said Jae Cox, Lime Orlando operations manager. “So, we won't see very many scooters, if any, ending up in those kinds of areas."

Lime suggests you wear a helmet when riding and try to stay in bike lanes. Users can ride on the sidewalk if there are no bike lanes nearby.

Because about 60% will by dropped near the bar scene, is it possible for someone to get a DUI while driving a scooter?

"They're treated just like bicycles in Orlando,” Cox said. “You can receive some penalty for riding a bike inebriated so you'd be able to, as well, for scooters."

The scooters will not be allowed in some areas like Lake Eola. They will slow down and come to a stop if riders enter one of those areas.
