ORLANDO, Fla. — Travelers heading through Orlando International Airport can now use a newly upgraded tram connection to Gates 100-129.
MCO on Friday launched the first upgraded Gate Link track, part of the airport’s $253 million Gate Link Replacement Project. The upgraded system includes new tram vehicles, track surfaces, power equipment, controls, communications systems and platform screen doors.
The Gate Link serves passengers traveling between the main terminal and Gates 100-129. Each new tram set can carry up to 240 passengers, airport officials said.
“This Gate Link milestone brings that vision to life with a smoother, more dependable experience for passengers,” Greater Orlando Aviation Authority CEO Lance Lyttle said in a statement.
Crews will next begin work on the second track serving Gates 100-129 while the newly upgraded track remains in service. After that work is complete, construction will shift to the Gate Link serving Gates 70-99, where both tracks, trams and supporting systems will be replaced.
The project is part of MCO’s broader $6.9 billion capital improvement program.
