ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 37-year-old Orlando man was killed Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Clarcona and Gilliam roads in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers arrested 46-year-old Orlando resident Jason Salustro after witnesses reported seeing him flee the crash scene on foot.
The crash happened about 7:23 p.m. as Salustro drove a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe south on Clarcona Road, FHP said. Near Gilliam Road, Salustro attempted to turn left and drove into the path of a northbound 1999 Honda Civic.
The Tahoe’s front-right side struck the front of the Civic, troopers said.
The Civic driver was taken to AdventHealth Apopka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. FHP said he was not wearing a seat belt. His name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities said Salustro was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries.
After the collision, witnesses called law enforcement and reported that Salustro had run from the scene. Orange County sheriff’s deputies and state troopers searched the area and located him about a mile away, according to FHP.
Salustro was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and booked into the Orange County Jail.
Clarcona Road near Gilliam Road was temporarily closed after the crash but later reopened. Trooper Gonzalez is investigating the crash, while Corporal Nettles is leading the homicide investigation.
