Orlando officers attacked while breaking up downtown bar fight, police say

Orlando police were attempting to break up a fight between several people when Khareem Calderon attacked one of the officers, police said.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando police said a man has been charged with attempted murder after one of their officers was attacked while breaking up a bar fight on Saturday night.

Police responded to the night club SHOTS Orlando on East Pine Street at around 11:30 p.m. after reports of a fight.

Orlando police were attempting to break up a fight between several people when Khareem Calderon attacked one of the officers, police said.

Calderon picked up a retractable post used to designate where people should form a line and hit Officer Guevara over the head.

According to an arrest report, Calderon swung the post over his head with both arms as he struck the officer.

Both officers were wearing police uniforms during the incident, officials said.

Officers said a bouncer at the night club grabbed Calderon after he struck the officer.

The second Orlando officer also said he was also struck in the head during the incident.

Guevara was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

Officer said Guevara received a long and deep slash to the top of his head in the attack.

Officers said Calderon is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

Calderon was initially given bond in the amount of $15,000 but later revoked by the judge for violation of a 2019 pre-trial release agreement.
