Orlando summer camps to see big changes over coronavirus concerns

ORLANDO, Fla. — As distance learning wraps up for students in Orange County, registration for summer camp is opening up Monday.

Parents like Dwight Williams are ready for summer camp to begin as so many kids need to be out of the house and having fun.

“It’s needed big time,” Williams said. “I tell you, they are losing interaction with their peers, summer camp provides physical fitness for the kids.”

But the coronavirus pandemic has created cause for change.

Orlando city staff have been trained in the guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Those guidelines include:

1. Children will be kept in the same small group of ten or less throughout the duration of the camp.

2. Each group will meet in separate rooms and will not interact with other groups.

3. Cleaning and disinfecting with be intensified.

4. Only children and assigned staff will be allowed inside facilities after being screened and temperature checked.

Registration begins Tuesday morning, and this year's modified camp will reduce overall capacity.

The city will offer slots to 720 kids instead of the more than 17,000 slots originally planned.

Camps will run from June 1 until August 7.
