‘Pastors to the Polls’: Local African American church leaders encouraging parishioners to turn out to vote

ORLANDO, Fla. — In Orlando, African American church leaders came together to pray, vote and work to get their congregations to vote.

They referred to the event as “Pastors to the Polls.”

It marked the beginning of a weekend of get-out-the-vote events.

On Friday the pastors led by example, walking to the early voting site at the Amway Center to cast their ballots.

“We’re just trying to galvanize everyone together to go out and exercise their rights,” said Rev. Dr. Pam Powell, of the African American Congress of Christian Women in Ministry.

Leading by example, they said they want their parishioners and people in the Black community to see that voting is important.

They’re working to get their parishioners to turn out in an effort they’re calling “Souls to the Polls.”

They said it’s something they do every election but they believe it’s more important in this election than ever before.
