UCF researcher awarded Mayor’s Distinguished Resident Award

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A UCF researcher is the most recent recipient of the Orange County Mayor’s Distinguished Resident Award.

Officials said Dr. Noemi Pinilla-Alonso, an associate scientist at the Florida Space Institute, was honored for her significant accomplishments in astrophysics and planetary sciences.

“As Women’s History Month comes to an end, we are proud to recognize the professional achievements of Dr. Pinilla-Alonso, a seasoned Hispanic professional in her field,” Demings said in a statement. “Dr. Pinilla Alonso’s accomplishments have far-reaching impacts on this generation and generations to come. She serves as a role model inspiring students to pursue STEM education.”

Pinilla-Alonso was selected from a pool of over 1,100 proposals across 44 countries around the globe to study the solar system through NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the largest and most technologically-advanced telescope in history.

Officials said the Distinguished Resident Award is bestowed to individuals who, with their work or their actions, exemplify collaboration, innovation, and inclusion. The accolade is reserved for individuals with significant accomplishments and for those who commit selfless acts to save and protect others.
