Orlando church allows gay couple to baptize son after controversy

ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orlando gay couple has won their fight to have their child baptized at a local church.

Rich McCaffrey and his husband, Eric McCaffrey, adopted a son and had plans to baptize the child at Orlando’s Cathedral Church of St. Luke in April, but it was called off three days before the ceremony.

Some members of the congregation were against the baptism because the baby’s parents are gay.

But after a meeting last night with the Episcopal bishop, the child will be baptized.

Rich McCaffrey said the bishop apologized for how the situation was handled.

He took to social media to explain the situation and to thank the community for its support, saying, “Many expressed disappointment, anger and a lack of understanding about the situation."

McCaffrey said his family is staying with the church because, “We still have faith in the goodness of people, and we trust people have good intent and ultimately will do the right thing."

He added that he hopes the situation will one day teach his son a lesson about forgiveness and grace.
