Over 700 Orange County students to compete in chess tournament

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A few lucky local students will announce checkmate during this weekend’s Orange County Public School Chess tournament.

Students in kindergarten through the 12th grade will use Swiss Style tournament rules to compete in six 30-minute rounds, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The middle and senior student players will use a clock and earn one point per win and half a point for a draw.

The chess players that dominate in making the right moves will have the chance at a division title.

Chess teaches problem-solving, creative thinking, abstract reasoning skills, patience and good sportsmanship.

The game helps students also improve their strategic thinking and pattern recognition skills.

The competition will be held in the cafeteria at SunRidge Middle School in Tildenville.
