Police lights

SANFORD, Fla. — A man was shot Friday evening while being robbed outside a dollar store, the Sanford Police Department said.

The robbery-turned-shooting happened at about 9:15 p.m. outside a Dollar Tree at Towne Center Boulevard and St. Johns Parkway, Sanford police Officer Ronny Neal said.

The man told investigators he was sitting in his car when two men approached him and demanded money.

He said when he told the robbers he didn't have any money on him, they pulled him out of his car, beat him and shot him in the leg, Neal said.

Detectives said witnesses gave them conflicting reports: Some said the men ran away while others said they fled in a truck.

The man, who wasn't publicly identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

He's expected to survive his injuries.

No other details were given.
